Diversity in Education

Cultural Diversity in Education was a very informative and interesting course.  I learned about the numerous ways in which my future classroom of students will be diverse.  My students may come from different socio-economic backgrounds, different races, genders, and learning abilities.  They may be gifted or, could be English Language Learners.  As a future educator, because of the knowledge I have obtained from this class, I now have a better grasp of what to expect in my classroom.  My primary objective is to encourage my students to embrace diversity just as I have, and respect one another despite the differences they may have.  I want my students to see diversity as something positive where everyone can learn from one another.  I will be certain to promote “School Pride” to help boost student morale and confidence.  I wish to create a community within my classroom where all students feel safe, secure, accepted, and welcome.

In “My Philosophy of Cultural Diversity in Education/Embracing Diversity,” I have had the opportunity to express how I, will educate my future students on diversity, and help them to embrace it with an open mind and heart as I have.  The only way for my students to learn how to get along with one another is for me to address diversity in our classroom, and help students become more informed and more accepting of one another.  I have ideas on how to handle this in my future classroom, and implementing multicultural education into my lessons and curriculum is one way.  Students will have a chance to express themselves through activities that will be planned throughout the school year.  By becoming a cultural responsive teacher, I can show my students, by example, how easy it is to be nice to one another despite the differences that may be apparent.  I want to be the approachable teacher that will be available for my students, who will challenge my students, and who will accept them for who they are.

My cultural experience essay entitled, “How Did My Life End Up Like This?,” was the product of a role playing project that I participated in.  I had the opportunity to document in my own words my interpretation of this real life identity, and how this experience has impacted me as a future teacher.  I realize in my classroom that I will have students from a variety of different socioeconomic status’, diverse cultures, and ethnic backgrounds.  This exercise was an eye opening experience for me to recognize that these aren’t just stories I hear about on the local or international news, but they are very real issues that are existing right now in our very own backyards.  I have the power as a future teacher to ensure that these children get the education that they are entitled to, and I aim to make this happen.

I had a wonderful time preparing my lesson on Brazil for Diversity Day.  During my research, I learned so much about Brazilian culture, and I was very excited about being able to share this information with the students that would be assigned to my group.  When I begin teaching in the next few years, I see how important it is for me to be a culturally responsive teacher who introduces to my future students differences that exist around the world, and the differences that can be present in our very own classroom.  I want my students to be respectful and considerate of these differences, so I plan on including a diversity day event at least once during the school year so my students understand the importance of diversity.  Diversity is something to be proud of!
