Classroom Relationships

Behavior problems can be a thing of the past with all the teacher tips I’ve learned in my classroom relationships class this semester.  During my group theorist presentation on Fred Jones, I discovered that proximity is an effective tool to use to manage my students without disrupting the lesson or the entire classroom.  For my honors project, I read the book, The First Days of School: How to be an Effective Teacher, by co-authors Harry K. and Rosemary T. Wong.  This helpful resource taught me that it is crucial to establish classroom rules and procedures the first day of school, so a foundation for the rest of the school year is set, which will prevent chaos in the classroom from developing later on.  My service learning experience this semester was with a class of twenty-nine 4th graders.  I observed how my mentor teacher arranged her students’ desks to accommodate the students in her class, and to ensure she has easy access to them if they have questions.  I made note of this arrangement so I can use it in my future classroom since it was a very efficient use of space.  Classroom management skills are an absolute must for a teacher in order to have a positive, proactive, and functional classroom, and I am very equipped with the tools and knowledge of what it takes to make this happen for my future classroom.

My philosophy of classroom relationships is all connected to how I plan on implementing positive discipline methods in order to keep my class running smoothly and efficiently.  I want to eliminate distracting, controlling and violent behaviors before they even start, and the best way to do this is by being proactive.  As a future teacher, I recognize how imperative it is for me to have a multitude of strategies created to encourage my students to be responsible, respectful, and in control of their own behaviors and actions.  This class has equipped me with the necessary tools to accomplish this task in my future classroom.

One of the projects I worked on in my Classroom Relationships course was a group theorist presentation project on Dr. Fredric H. Jones.  I was very surprised to find out that Dr. Jones was never a teacher.  His professional background consists of a Ph.D. in clinical psychology.  Although his credentials do not include teaching, I felt good about so many of the basic fundamental principles he recommended teachers use while in the classroom.  His theory is based upon positive discipline, and my favorite two techniques that I plan to exercise in my future classroom are physical proximity and getting to know my students.  I want to establish a respectful and responsible classroom environment, and by implementing Dr. Jones’ theory, I am already on the right path.

For my honors project, I worked with a group of four other students in my class on a presentation based upon the book, The First Days Of School: How To Be An Effective Teacher, by Harry K. Wong and Rosemary T. Wong.  My chapter focused on the very specific ways to become an effective teacher.  This book was an excellent resource for me.  I learned a variety of ways how I can become an effective teacher for my future students.  On the first day of class I will be prepared to go over the classroom rules and procedures with my students.  Day one is when rules need to be introduced, so a foundation for the remainder of the school year is established.  Two key words the Wong’s mentioned throughout this book were efficient and effective.  “People who do things right are efficient.  And people who do things right over and over again, consistently, are effective.”  I am already very efficient, but I strive to be effective as well.  I urge anyone who is entering the field of education, to pick up a copy of this fabulous reference guide to help them develop their skills to become a consistent, efficient and effective teacher beginning on the first day of school.
